What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that deals with structure and function. Optimum health is a result of optimum function. If there is pressure along the spine, irritating and interfering with the nerves, it will disrupt proper function and can cause pain.
A chiropractor's job is to determine if such a problem exists and if it can be relieved.
No potentially harmful substances are introduced into the body, nor is any part of the body cut away. If a chiropractor cannot find the cause of your problem, you will be referred to another specialist.
When a vertebrae is misaligned, putting pressure on a nerve, and decreasing the potential for that nerve to function at its optimum, then you have a subluxation. A chiropractor's job is to eliminate the subluxation through proper spinal adjustments.
These illustrations help to show that everything in the body is connected with and controlled by nerves from the spinal cord and brain. Hard bone (vertebrae) choking the soft nerve will interfere with proper function.
Spinal nerves carry information from the brain to the body and from the body back to the brain. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves and are divided into two major groups.
Those nerves which are going and coming from the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, skin, blood vessels, etc...
Those nerves which are coming and going to the internal organs; heart, lungs, stomach, intestinal tract, reproductive organs, etc.
The Autonomic Nervous System
is that portion of our nervous system that controls the function of all our
internal organs (Visceral functions). It operates at a sub-conscious level and
controls the functions of the organs listed in this chart, such as the heart,
gastrointestinal peristalsis, and secretion of different glands.
The autonomic nervous system is activated by the brain, spinal cord,
paraspinal and interal nerve centers. The key is the same spinal nerve which
goes to your neck, arms, back and leg muscles, also goes to your heart, lungs,
stomach, kidney, and reproductive organs, etc.
Relief Care
Some go for symptomatic relief of pain or discomfort. The purpose of
relief care is to get you out of the pain as soon as possible. Schedule is
determined by your progress. But, remember, absence of pain and symptoms does
not mean the problem (subluxation) is gone.
Corrective Care
Others are interested in having the cause of the problem as well as the
symptoms corrected and relieved. Usually, about 10-15 office visits are needed,
depending on the severity of your condition. Office visits are usually twice
weekly for 3 weeks, then once weekly. This is a natural, permanent arrangement
and cannot be hurried.
Maintenance Care
Visits are scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks as needed to maintain optimum health.
Your chiropractor will weigh your needs and desires when recommending your treatment program. Please let her know the type of care desired so that she may be guided by your wishes whenever possible.
